NSS - Profile

             The National Service Scheme is a central sector scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It is popularly known as NSS. It provides an opportunity for the students to graduate and postgraduate at the college level to take part in various government-led community service activities and programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands-on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since the inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

Motto :

The motto of the National  Service Scheme is “ NOT ME BUT YOU “.It underlines that the welfare of an individual ultimately depends on the welfare of society as a whole. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of other individual's point of view and also shows consideration for fellow human beings.

NSS BADGE AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE:

All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS-led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility toward helping the needy.

The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours.

The red colour in the badge signifies the energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.

The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind.

Objectives of NSS

1.    To understand the community in which they work.

2.    To understand themselves in relation to their community.

3.    Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in the problem solving   process.

4.    Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.

5.    Utilize their knowledge in generating practical solutions to individual and community problems.

6.    Develop competence required for a group living and sharing of responsibilities.

7.    Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.

8.    Acquire leadership qualities and a democratic attitude.

9.    Develop the capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.

10. To extend national integration and social harmony.
